By AirplaneClosest international airport is Newcastle airport. The airport has its own train station, connecting to Newcastle Rail station, from which Durham is ~13 min by train. (Note that Teesside airport is technically closer but it only has regular flights to Amsterdam and is less well connected for transportation.) Edinburgh airport is also an option with larger number of daily direct flights, and ~2h train rides to Durham. Alternatively there are multiple airports in London, with frequent trains to Durham (see below).
By train Durham is well connected, located on the eastern rail line between London and Edinburgh. For connections check https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ or https://www.lner.co.uk/ . Be aware that for longer distances (especially travelling from London) prices increase closer to the travel data, so be sure to book train tickets a few weeks in advance.
